Infectious Diseases

Infectious Diseases (ID) is a medical specialty focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. ID specialists provide expert care for patients with both common and complex infections.

What is an Infectious Diseases Physician?

ID physicians are highly trained to manage conditions where infections may be severe, recurrent, or resistant to standard therapies. They also have expertise in managing infections in people with weakened immune systems, and in helping to prevent the spread of infectious conditions within the community.

ID specialists provide a wide range of clinical services, including:

  • Comprehensive assessment and management of acute and chronic infections.

  • Complex case management, including prolonged fevers, unusual infections, or infections that do not respond to standard treatments.

  • Care for immunocompromised patients (e.g. those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplantation, or living with chronic illnesses that affect immunity), managing both acute and chronic infections.

  • Travel medicine support, including tailored vaccination advice, pre-travel health checks, and management of travel-related infections.

  • Sexually transmitted infection (STI) care, with up-to-date treatments and long-term management.

  • Tuberculosis (active or latent) diagnosis and management, in collaboration with public health services.

  • Antimicrobial stewardship – ensuring the safe, effective, and responsible use of antimicrobial agents.

  • Infection control guidance for both hospital and community settings.
